One Silk Scarf, Eight Different Ways

silk scarf

silk scarf from maison k

The scarf above would be a great accessory to wear to a luncheon in Montecito or on a private patio in Morocco. The lovely arrangement pictured here, beckons to be enjoyed! There is something so classic, versatile and enduring about white furniture. Here in the interior courtyard of Riad Dixneuf La Ksour, Marakech, the old world elegance of white wicker, paired with the creamy walls and earthy tile, is both unexpected and luscious; an invitation to lounge on the chaise, enjoy a glass of mint tea and read a book with the soothing sound of trickling water from the pool nearby. This is a sanctuary of sorts, a beautiful spot for repose and relaxation. Wherever we are, that is a gift we must give ourselves – whether a beautiful escape far away, in our own backyard, or even in the boundless realm of our dreams and imagination.

The Perfect Gift

Duomo-e1448036119954_Knowing we would be in Milan briefly, I bought a tiny guide book; Lonely Planet “Pocket” Milan & The Lakes.  It had an intriguing cover photo of what looked to be the rooftop of a gothic cathedral. Delving inside I learned indeed, one can visit the rooftop of the Duomo, so it was a “Milan Must” for me.  We took a lift directly to the top and there began a phenomenal walk on the narrow pathways around the circumference of the roof, eventually climbing a skinny stairway to the tip top. There were hundreds of airy, intricately carved spires, humorous gargoyles, flying buttresses and marvelous statuary of saints, all seeming to float like an island on a cloud, with breath taking 360 degree views of the city surround.  The first cathedral was built on this site in the 4th century; this iteration was begun in the 14th century and took 600 years to complete.  There is a massive restoration and cleaning taking place; pictured, you can see the contrast of the work.  Mark Twain was in awe of this cathedral; Oscar Wilde not so much. I personnally love this other worldly fairy tale beauty of a cathedral.

Wrap Up Your Days and Nights

lightweight scarves at maison k

lightweight scarvesThis is not some far off tropical paradise but rather, in our own backyard, at Summerland Beach Lookout Park. I was on my way south on 101and the sunset sky and magnificent clearing winds begged me to exit and enjoy the show from this cliff-top view. The low slung clouds sailed like giant galleons through the sky. The sea was flat and rippled all at once. The leaves, trees and bushes sashayed madly all about as the celestial colors merged from blue to lavender to pink, coral, gold and indigo. What a California winter delight.

Breezy & Summery

ayurvedic scarves at maison k

Just in from Kerala, India, these exquisite striped scarves are handwoven of organic cotton and beautifully shaded with Ayurvedic herbal dyes.  The term “Ayurveda” is a combination of the Sanskrit word ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. This body of wisdom seeks to create a balanced and vital integration of the body, mind and spirit.

Update your spring/summer wardrobe with these lovely scarves and feel transported by an ancient and beautiful culture!

I recently returned from India where I was attending the Delhi Handicrafts Fair. Many of the things we enjoy on a daily basis be it a lantern, salad servers or a fashion accessory do not come out of a machine; they are all painstakingly made by hand.  And that includes the divine scarves above, that I found in Kerala.  A beautiful palm studded state in South West India, complete with inner coastal “backwaters”,  I enjoyed a wonderful visit at Vasundhara Sarovar Premiere.  This is the mesmerizing view from my “floating cottage”. The resort is a loving ode to the traditions, vegetation, architecture and cuisine of Kerala.  It is grandly and thoughtfully designed to showcase and protect the environment, preserve rich traditions and culture as well as be an oasis of exploration and repose in this fascinating area often referred to as the “Venice of the East.”

New Arrivals from France, Silk Scarves

lace pattern silk scarves at maison k, santa barbara ca
Arriving at San Francisco International Airport a couple days ago, after 30 hours of travel from India where I was finding wonderful new things for Maison K, I was entranced by a marvelous exhibit : Lace: A Sumptuous History 1600s-1900sPrior to being in India I was in Paris where I found the fantastic silk scarves shown above, designed with a beautiful lace and floral pattern.
I love lace! This beautifully displayed show explores a wide range of laces made over the centuries.  It succinctly explains the historical and technical development of lace and the various types with gorgeous, mind boggling examples be they edgings, parasols, gloves, collars or dresses. What exquisite creations!
The exhibit was made possible by generous loans from Lacis Museum of Lace & Textiles in Berkely, CA and The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale, CAI have never been to either museum but now look forward to further exploring this remarkable art form the next time I am near.

Window Displays are a great art form if you ask me, a former window dresser myself. And, especially wonderful at Christmas time. My all-time favorite windows are that of Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. They are in great company with Barneys, Hermès, Tiffany and Louis Vuitton nearby, all who always have show stopping windows as well. Yet every year I find myself standing on Fifth Avenue between 57th and 58th the longest, soaking up the wit, infinitesimal details, phenomenal fashions and sophisticated spectacle at BG. Shown left, is a detail of one of the windows from two Christmas’s ago. There were several themes, all created with a specific color way, medium and material; this one was in black and white paper, which sounds so simple, yet this was the most complex and extravagant expression of paper ever created! I am still awestruck by it and was tickled when the wonderful film “Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorfs” came out and followed the designers and artists behind the brilliance of the windows. After checking out all the windows, and when you need a timeout, enjoy the tea room upstairs designed by Kelly Wearstler or settle into a great film at The Paris Theatre just around the corner. Happy Holidays!
