Bonne Anneé et Bonne Santé

happy new year from maison k

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM MAISON KSpeaking of metallic glimmer and glamour, this stunning window at Bergdorf Goodman, representing Music, was my favorite among several hot contenders. Somehow, someway, BG manages to outdo themselves each holiday season with spectacular displays. Their windows are showstoppers, viewers blocking sidewalk traffic, standing in awe of the creative and logistical brilliance of each design. On another holiday note, here in Santa Barbara check out A Tuba Christmas downtown just off of De la Guerra Plaza. The creative magic of the holidays is alive and well from coast to coast!

Happy New Year from MAISON K!

CHRISTMAS AT MAISON K MONTECITOIn addition to the beautiful topography of Santa Barbara, we are surrounded by a multitude of cultural treasures.  One of the oldest and most iconic is our  “Queen of Missions.” Founded by Franciscan Friar Fermin de Lasuen on the Feast of St. Barbara, December 4 1786, the Mission is unique with it’s twin bell towers, a feature restricted to a cathedral church.  Most visitors know the classic exterior view, yet a visit inside the main chapel (pictured), gardens and cemetery is fascinating. The Mission has the oldest tradition of choral singing among the California Missions and in the 19th century served in part as a college, making it Santa Barbara’s first institution of higher learning. I always make an evening visit to the creche set up mid-December, wonderfully back lit by the Mission facade under a big shimmering starry sky.

BLACK FRIDAY jewelry saleIt’s Thanksgiving, a time to stop and reflect upon our blessings large and small. One of the most fundamental things to be grateful for is our health and well being. And for those without it, we do what we can to help their healing. Last Saturday a group of friends and I participated in an Ultimate Hike; what turned out to be 15 magnificent, snowy miles on a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail in Big Bear.  This was a fundraising challenge for Cure Search, an organization dedicated to easing and eradicating childhood cancer. The night before our walk in the woods, people shared their stories and reasons for participating. There were several pediatric oncologists and nurses; inspired by their experiences with their young patients and their gratefulness for the tools Cure Search provides them to help guide families when a child is diagnosed with cancer. There were people whose children had survived cancer and others who had lost a precious child. They were all there, we were there, because we can take these physical steps which are also metaphorical steps toward a solution to such devastating illnesses. If interested please visit  The Ramblin’ Roses  website; through December, the proceeds of our offerings go to Cure Search.

From Kimberly, Maison K, Jewelry and Confections

The photo left, is from the uber-chic always cutting-edge Colette on Rue Saint-Honore in Paris. All any one of these winter ensembles need is some of our jewelry to complete the look! This shop is always a must see for the exquisitely edited clothing assortments, art books, music and a great people watching, time-out cafe. A few other musts in the neighborhood are:

1. Hotel Costes – stay or simply enjoy a meal in one of the most beautiful hideaways in all of Paris.

 2. Musée des Arts Decoratifs – the most wonderful decorative arts museum with special events ranging from Ralph Laurens exotic cars to Lanvin exhibitions.

3. Palais-Royal – enjoy a stroll through the arcades and allees of trees in this magnificent 17th century palace, enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants and try fragrances at Serge Lutens.

4. Eric Kayser is a great place for a quick bite – I stopped in for  breakfast, headed upstairs and sat down across from a man, who was signing books?  I realized this was the man – the createur of this highly esteemed boulangerie. So naturally, had him personalize a book!

5. Café Marly – always a fantastic experience dining on the casual yet sophisticated terrace, gazing at the Louvre courtyard or in the grand interior.

Maison K, From Kimberly, Faceted Jewels, US Botanical Gardens
U.S. Botanical Gardens (Washington, D.C.)

Not many people know that one of the most splendid U. S. Botanical Gardens in our nation is adjacent to the U.S. Capital and is the vision of our first President, George Washington!  Established by congress in 1820, the Conservatory that currently houses this living plant museum was built in 1933.  There are two courtyard gardens and 10 garden rooms under glass with numerous themes such as Jungle, World Desserts, Rare & Endangered Plants, and Orchids to mention only several.  The displays of the plants and trees are extraordinary; a wonderful diversion amidst it’s glorious Smithsonian Museum neighbors.
