Rincon Beach House

rincon beach house as seen in sb magazine

SANTA BARBARA BEACH HOUSEIndicative of many beach side communities is the palm tree. Is there anything that says summer and sunshine and balmy breezes more than an Arecaceae – as called by the botanists? What’s most phenomenal is that there are so many types – 2600 species, living within a greater geographical range than you might imagine. Palms create an incredible array of goods that billions of people depend on. From coconut meat, milk and water to wax and oil, coir and rattan, dates, nuts, heart of palm and wine – there are numerous products derived from this tree. The palms here are probably about a hundred years old and stand majestically along Butterfly Beach; they beautifully sway with any wind.  The Palms in Carpinteria has photos of their young palms planted when they first opened in 1912.  I don’t know if the ones there now are the originals but they are sky high.  An evening at The Palms is like falling into a time warp with the added fun, if you so choose, of getting to grill your own steak and halibut after a trip to their classic salad bar.  Happy Summer!

Che Bella! Italian Linens

Italian Linens____________________________________

I have fallen in love with Florence. This is surprising as till recently I’ve always felt Rome the ne plus ultra of Italy, yet I’m smitten!  I was last there on business eons ago but recently a friend (a former colleague and buyer herself) said, “Kim have you been to Florence lately?  There are still many small workshops with people making things in their ateliers, there is so much for you there.”  As promised, an endless range of wonderful product abounds, such as the pillows above and suede fringe wraps we’ve sold out of again, awaiting a new shipment. Wherever you glance there is beauty; the buildings, the food, the gentility, the elegance of an European life – that grace is lost in so much of the world but it lives on here and may it always reign! Pictured here is the exquisite 14th century Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, built by the Dominicans. They also began making an antiseptic rose water to combat the plague and in 1612 founded the “Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella”, one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, still home to exquisite fragrances, bath and body care products.

A Change of Season – Bohemian Chic Accessories

Fall Preview

bohemian chic accessories at maison k for fallDon’t blink, because if you do you might miss this magical spot on the Eastern side of Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur. Nestled into a mountainside, at a bend in the road, sheltered by grand redwoods you’ll find the most enchanting hideaway; called Deetjens Big Sur Inn, named after it’s Norwegian founder. Arranged like a tiny rambling village, surrounded by glorious flowers and mystic trees, the inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Each room has a totally unique charm, with starched pillowcases and cozy quilts. The dining room is like stepping into elegant cottage dream, one half expects to see Goldilocks and the 3 Bears dinning there too.  This is where we enjoyed dinner the night of our engagement, so this spot will always be dear to my heart!

Finds From New York Gift Show

finds from new york gift show

MuseumThe textiles and rugs above are a feast for the senses (luxurious finds from New York Gift Show) – their soft luxurious textures palpable to our eye and hand. In contrast, the sleek and voluminous lines of the artful metal and glass fabrication of the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris (left) is a whole other feast.  It is massive yet elegant and light and seen from a birds-eye view, looks like a windswept crystal galleon sailing through the emerald green forest “sea” of the Bois de Boulogne. We went to this much anticipated new museum last May, where there was an exhibit of Frank Gehry’s, many design concepts, models and imaginings of what could be – before arriving at the final expression we enjoy today. It was fascinating to see that great things don’t just happen in one swoop, but evolve over time; there’s a serious gestation period we usually aren’t privy to. This building is a stunning addition to 21st Century architecture and design.

Hand-Stitched Leather Ottomans

Hand-Stitched Leather Ottoman

SunsetThe Santa Barbara Magazine spread above reprises the chic vibe of 70s California in a beguiling 21st century way.  I can almost hear my very first LP, the Beach Boys’ Endless Summer album wafting in the background. Once upon a time, summers did seem endless; basking at the beach, kicking back on bean bag chairs (updated like these hand-stitched leather ottomans), riding bikes all around and shopping for “love beads.” Fiery pink, coral and golden sunsets, gorgeous backdrops for silhouetted palm trees create the perfect endless summer sunsets.

Chic Cowhides for Your Home

As you can see from the photos above, these all-natural cowhides look amazing in any setting. All-natural means natural colors and natural patterns, no dyes are used whatsoever and no two are alike. They possess true naturally beauty. Cowhides look dramatic under a sofa and add an unexpected look to a table top in a foyer. You may not expect this, but they are soft and luxurious to the touch and work well as a cozy throw over an upholstered chair.

Cowhides remind me of milk and cheese!

Here is one of the most beautiful and delicious salads that has ever been placed in front of me. It was so original and inspirational, I had to just stare at it for a while before enjoying it!

The perfectly ripe tomatoes were still on the vine, the fresh mozzarella cheese was lightly drizzled with a balsamic/honey glaze. The caramelized onions and thinly sliced zucchini were a tasty addition rounding out the dish. Divine!
